What started as a stolen vehicle-in-progress call in the town of Oregon ended with the arrest of a suspect connected to last week’s string of break-ins in eastern Dane County.
At 3:39 a.m. today, a woman on Trail Ridge Ct. in the town of Oregon called 911 after seeing two individuals walking around her vehicle in her driveway. While deputies were responding, the individuals stole her Hyundai Palisade. Sheriff’s deputies located the SUV and began pursuing it, along with another stolen vehicle. Madison Police and Monona Police responded to assist deputies, and both vehicles were rendered inoperable after road spikes were deployed, ending the pursuit.
Chavis D. Webster, 20, of Madison, fled the Hyundai Palisade on foot, but with the help of a Madison Police K9, he was caught. While Webster was running from law enforcement, he dropped a backpack, which was recovered and found to contain items belonging to victims of recent thefts in the Cambridge area, as well as a stolen firearm. The other stolen vehicle was recovered after being found abandoned on Awahnee Ct. in the town of Oregon.
Webster is currently being held at the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Owner's Consent, Eluding, Resisting, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and a probation hold.
“Anytime a vehicle pursuit begins, our top priority is the safety of the public, our deputies, and everyone involved,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett. I’m proud of the teamwork and discipline shown during this incident. Their coordinated efforts allowed us to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion and take a significant offender into custody.
Investigators believe Webster was not working alone on the night of February 1st when victims in Deerfield, Cambridge, and Jefferson County reported multiple break-ins and vehicle damage. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating those crimes. Anyone with information is urged to call Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.
