Dane County Sheriff’s deputies working the overnight shift on Saturday were busy with intoxicated drivers. Five drivers were arrested in less than an hour and a half during the early morning hours of November 2nd.
The first arrests occurred after deputies responded to assist the McFarland Police on U.S. Highway 51 at 1:15 am, where multiple vehicles had driven through a road construction area. Two of those drivers were found to be intoxicated, and deputies arrested Neng Chang, age 44, of Madison, for his 4th OWI, along with a 25-year-old man from Madison for his 1st OWI.
At 1:40 am, deputies responded to a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road on Femrite Drive and CTH AB in the town of Cottage Grove. The 26-year-old driver from Madison was arrested for OWI and booked into the Dane County Jail on two counts of misdemeanor bail jumping.
At 2:24 am, deputies responded to a report of a wrong-way driver on U.S. Highway 12 in Middleton. A GMC Acadia was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes. When deputies found the SUV, the driver was attempting to drive through the grassy median. The 26-year-old man from Sun Prairie was cited for OWI – 1st offense, in addition to several other traffic citations.
Finally, at about 2:40 am, a deputy stopped a Chevrolet pick-up truck for speeding (60 mph in a 25 mph zone) and running a red light on Millpond Road approaching CTH AB in the town of Cottage Grove. The driver, a 25-year-old man from Madison, was cited for OWI – 1st offense and received additional traffic citations.
“Every decision to drive impaired puts lives at risk,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett. “These arrests made by our deputies represent potential tragedies that were prevented.”
