MADISON – This morning, Dane County Executive Melissa Agard joined members of Firefighters Local 311, community leaders, and residents at a memorial service honoring the victims and heroes of September 11, 2001.

“On 9/11, our nation endured unimaginable tragedy,” County Executive Agard said. “Nearly 3,000 lives were lost, and families were forever changed. Yet, in the midst of devastation, we witnessed extraordinary courage. Firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and everyday people ran toward danger - into burning buildings, into collapsing towers - because saving lives mattered more than their own safety. That bravery and selflessness will never be forgotten.”

“Where others hesitate, you step forward. First responders run toward the hazard, not away from it. And in doing so, you embody the very best of who we are as a community,” Agard continued. “By ensuring our first responders have the support, resources, and respect they deserve, we honor the sacrifices of those who gave their lives that day, and the daily sacrifices made by you and your families.”

The County Executive underscored the importance of remembering 9/11 not only with reflection, but also with action. The ceremony, hosted by Firefighters Local 311, featured a moment of silence, remarks from community leaders, and a remembrance of those lost in the attacks 24 years ago.

“Today and every day, we are grateful for the courage of our first responders,” Agard said. “We will never forget September 11th, and we will never stop honoring the heroes it revealed.”
