MADISON — In recognition of National Foster Care Month, Dane County Executive Melissa Agard is urging residents to consider becoming foster parents to address the county's critical shortage of foster homes.
"Every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment," said Executive Agard. "Currently, Dane County is experiencing a significant decline in available foster homes, making it imperative for community members to step forward."
According to the Dane County Department of Human Services, the number of licensed foster homes has decreased from 168 to approximately 110 over the past year, 21 Kinship Licensed homes marking a 10-year low. Meanwhile, around 190 children are in the county's foster care system, many of whom are teenagers or part of sibling groups in need of placement.
DCDHS Out of Home Care Supervisor, Amy Harsh, emphasized the urgency: "We need more compassionate, patient people who are ready to open their hearts and homes to kids who’ve experienced trauma. There’s a particular need for foster homes for teens, and for families who can keep siblings together whenever possible."
Becoming a foster parent involves a comprehensive process, including background checks, training, and home assessments. Dane County offers various types of foster care placements, such as emergency, long-term, and concurrent care, to match the diverse needs of children.
"Foster parents play a crucial role in providing stability and support to children during challenging times. Their dedication can have a lasting impact on a child's life,” Agard added. “And please know, our team at Human Services is here to support you every step of the way if you choose to become a foster parent.”
